Huichol
Indian hand-beaded gourd bowl
The
Huichols are one of the few remaining indigenous civilizations in
the world to remain true to their heritage, resisting Western influences.
Living in remote areas, high in the rugged Sierra Madre east of
Puerto Vallarta, has kept them shut them off from the rest of the
world. An important part of their culture is the creation of art,
inspired by vision quests and dreams.
Believed to be direct descendants of the Aztecs, the Huichols create
colorful works of art, by pressing yarn or beads into waxed surfaces.
The original Huichol art from vivamexico.com comes from the village
of San Andres Coamihata - an important religious and political center
for the Huichol Indian nation. Each piece is purchased directly
from the Huichol community, and 100% of the profits from the sale
of these pieces is donated to the Huichol Spinning Wheel project.
Note that as each piece is created individually, colors and patterns
will vary.
